Important covered outdoor spaces yield for year round entertaining. The design features the use of natural and environmentally sociable materials with the design aim of the house blending with its coastal beach setting. A four bedroom home with media room and library, the weatherboard beach house is fresh in style yet sympathetic with other timber houses in the street. Positioned on a north facing site, we pushed the limits of the severe Byron Bay council controls to maximize the accommodation towards the front of the site. But architect Ed Davis has done just that. As Byron Bay Architects we love using locally sourced materials. A glass link joins the old house to the new extension and features a Japanese garden to produce a sense of quiet throughout the home. The tall windows and light wells fill the living spaces with an abundance of spontaneous light. We have worn Davis Architects three times and in our minds Ed Davis is the superior architect you'll find. The central design aim was to create a series of indoor and outdoor living spaces that connected easily and directly to the important north facing garden. The Council process in Byron Bay can be challenging. An environmentally aware approach was important to the design to gain both the client's vision and the local environment. We were living in Sydney for the majority of the design, development and approval process so it was appropriate to know that Davis Architects were managing local issues with Council and other authorities. A large four bedroom residence willing a family of six, the house was extended to the rear to enlarge the main bedroom, en suite, kitchen and media room. The house visually connects and extends itself into the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of calm, openness and space appropriate to the north coast lifestyle. We wanted an apartment which maximized the surrounding views and to improve upon the existing rooms to let more light into the space. Byron Bay House 1 features extensive outdoor decks, providing a type of second living room to allow the owners to appreciate the views of the bay and hills beyond. The timber draws the outer into the home and anchors the house in its beach side setting. The design features considerable environmental features, the maximum imperative being the central light well and 'green wall' which draws air and light into the building. Large glass doors slide neatly aside to extend the indoor living area out to the deck, thereby achieving a further sense of openness. The key element in the design was the concept of the central courtyard. As a result, internally we were able to create a large barrier less living space whose focus is the garden courtyard. The building has been designed to be naturally ventilated throughout and employs the stack effect to naturally cool the building in summer. Completed by Edward Davis whilst occupied with the Department of Public Works and Services.
